Built for everyone who needs it
Last reviewed:
Money help only works if you can use it. FinLII is designed for people reading on a small phone, using a screen reader, zooming in, navigating by keyboard, or reading in a second language.
Our standard
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA across the whole site. We test every page with automated checks and by hand, with a keyboard and at small screen sizes, before each release.
What we’ve built in
- A typeface for low vision. Body text is set in Atkinson Hyperlegible, designed by the Braille Institute so letters that look alike are easier to tell apart.
- Keyboard all the way. Every journey, tool and quiz works with a keyboard, with a visible focus outline and a “Skip to content” link on every page.
- Captions and transcripts. Every annotated explainer has captions and a full text transcript, and you can step through it at your own pace.
- Text with every picture. Charts and infographics have a text description of what they show, and the numbers are in the page text too.
- Light and dark. The site follows your device’s light or dark setting, with colour contrast that meets WCAG AA in both.
- Less motion. If you’ve asked your device to reduce motion, animations are turned off.
- Zoom and small screens. Pages reflow at 200% zoom and on phone-sized screens without sideways scrolling.
- Plain language. We write short sentences, explain terms where they appear and keep a glossary of money words.
- No time limits. Nothing on FinLII times out or asks you to hurry.
Known limitations
We’re honest about what isn’t right yet:
- French. The everyday money, debt and credit journeys, the tools page and the glossary page are in English only for now. Our main pages and the benefits and fraud journeys are also in French.
- Interactive charts. Some simulators draw charts that update as you type. The key results are always shown as text, but screen reader users may find the charts themselves add little.
- Sorting and tap-to-reveal exercises are fully usable by keyboard and screen reader, but can take more steps than with a mouse or touch.
- Links to other sites. Government and non-profit sites we link to have their own accessibility.
If something here stops you from using FinLII, we want to know.
Tell us about a barrier
Tell us the page, what you were trying to do, and the device, browser or assistive technology you use, if you know.
We’ll reply within five business days, and if we can’t fix it quickly, we’ll help you get the same information another way, such as in plain text by email.
How we check
- Automated testing with axe on every page, in light and dark themes, before each release
- Keyboard-only and 200% zoom checks on every journey
- Mobile checks at 390 pixels wide
- Screen reader checks with VoiceOver and NVDA, which we’re building into every release
