The ground rules
Last updated:
- FinLII is free education about money in Canada. It isn’t advice.
- What you type stays in your browser. We don’t collect it.
- Use what you learn however helps you. Please don’t copy the site to sell it or pass it off as your own.
- We work hard to keep things accurate, but rules change. Check the official source before you act.
1. Who we are
FinLII (Financial Literacy, Inclusion and Independence) is run by KPIFinity Inc., a Canadian company. In these terms, “FinLII”, “we” and “us” mean KPIFinity Inc. “You” means anyone who uses the site. By using finlii.com you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the site.
2. Education, not advice
FinLII explains how money works in general. It is not financial, investment, tax, legal or credit advice, and it doesn’t consider your personal situation.
- We don’t recommend specific products, providers, securities or investments.
- We don’t decide whether you qualify for any benefit, account, loan or program. Only the organization that runs it can.
- Calculators, simulators and examples give estimates for learning. Your lender, the CRA, your province or a professional has the final numbers.
Before you make a decision about your own money, check the official source, and consider talking to a qualified professional, a free tax clinic, a non-profit credit counsellor or a Licensed Insolvency Trustee.
3. Accuracy and changes
We rely on government, regulator and official program sources, date the figures that change, and review them at least once a year. Even so, rules and amounts change, sometimes quickly, and mistakes can happen. If you spot something wrong, please tell us at hello@finlii.com.
We may update, move or remove any part of the site at any time, and we may update these terms. When we do, we’ll change the “Last updated” date above. Using the site after a change means you accept the updated terms.
4. Your information
You don’t need an account to use FinLII. What you type into journeys and tools is saved only in your own browser, on your device. We can’t see it. Our privacy page explains exactly what is stored, where, and how to clear it.
Because your progress lives in your browser, it can be lost if you clear your browser data, use private browsing or switch devices. Please keep a copy of anything you need, such as a plan slip.
5. Using FinLII
You’re welcome to:
- use the site for yourself, your family or the people you support
- print or copy your own plan slips
- link to any page, and share pages with others
- use FinLII in a class, workshop or counselling session, as long as it stays free for participants and you credit FinLII
Please don’t:
- copy, republish or sell the site’s content, design or code, or present it as your own, without our written permission
- use the site to break the law or to mislead anyone, including pretending to be FinLII
- try to disrupt the site, get around its security or overload it, including with automated scraping
6. Our content
The text, illustrations, infographics, tools, design and the FinLII name and seal belong to KPIFinity Inc. or the people who licensed them to us. Names and figures in examples and sample documents are fictional; any resemblance to real people or accounts is a coincidence. Government and organization names are used only to identify them; it doesn’t mean they endorse FinLII.
If you’d like to use our content in a way these terms don’t cover, write to hello@finlii.com.
7. Links to other sites
We link to government services, regulators, non-profits and other trusted sources so you can go straight to the official information. We don’t control those sites and aren’t responsible for their content, availability or privacy practices. We don’t receive anything for linking to them.
8. Limits of our responsibility
We provide FinLII free of charge and “as is”. We do our best to keep it accurate, available and secure, but we can’t promise it will always be complete, up to date or error-free.
To the extent the law allows, KPIFinity Inc. isn’t responsible for any loss or damage that comes from using, or not being able to use, the site, or from relying on its content instead of checking the official source or getting advice about your situation. Nothing in these terms limits any rights you have under consumer protection laws that can’t be waived.
9. The law that applies
These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Alberta and the federal laws of Canada that apply there, unless the law of the province or territory where you live says otherwise.
